Circular economy between the need for technologies and awareness

Extraction of natural resources, excessive waste production and global warming are problems known to all. According to a study by the United Nations Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change, per limiting the devastating effects of climate change remain only 12 years, rethinking production and consumption models on a global scale to take into account the concept of finite limit of resources.

Taking advantage of the digital technologies underlying the fourth industrial revolution to promote the introduction of a Circular Economy can be a first step towards the development of responsible production and consumption, but the path to be taken remains full of pitfalls.

How can technologies enable new circular business models?

The Circular Economy is a new economic paradigm that, unlike the Linear Economy, decouples economic growth from the extraction of raw materials and the generation of waste, shifting the emphasis from maximizing "flows" (sale of finished products) to enhancement of the "installed park" (maintaining the materials, components and products at their maximum utility and value). If designed correctly, the Circular Economy allows you to generate long-term economic value: at the European level, a Circular transition would involve a cost savings on materials of up to 630 billion euros per year (reusing secondary raw materials).

In practice, and focusing on the production of goods and services (cycles of technical materials), the Circular Economy is implemented by introducing a whole series of recirculations, through the provision of basic services repair and maintenance, to extend the useful life of finished products; the provision of advanced services (sharing, pay-per-use, etc.), to maximize the use and installed base of finished products; the reconditioning of finished products, to reuse the same product through several cycles; the disassembly and reassembly (remanufacturing), to reuse the same components several times in the creation of new products or as spare parts; the recycling, to reuse the same materials several times.

Circular economy and linear economy compared

Taken together, these five recirculations they allow to:

  1. increase the efficiency of products during their use (provision of advanced sharing and pay-per-use services to quickly replace the installed base of products with energy-efficient and more performing products);
  2. extend its useful life (provision of basic repair and maintenance services);
  3. recover the residual value at the end of the cycle (through reconditioning, remanufacturing and recycling).
